This research paper by Schreibman and others explores how the influences of behavioural psychology and developmental science come together to form Naturalistic, Developmental, Behavioural Interventions (NDBI).
The ESDM is part of the NDBI family, and this is really important to understand because the research is helping us navigate effective and appropriate interventions for very young children, rather than traditional forms of highly adult directed instruction such as ABA programs, which were built for older children. As children with Autism are being diagnosed earlier in life, we need to provide quality programs which compliment how typically developing children learn, and their trajectory of development. Take a look at this paper to read more about NDBI’s, how it was developed and the key features of the style of intervention.
Handy Tip: Always look at the appropriateness of an intervention before committing. Young children learn through play and through everyday, natural routines. This is no different for the child with Autism. All children are capable of learning, they may just need more support, more intensity and more opportunities to develop the skill. Parent coaching is a wonderful way of learning how to do this, and building your confidence to teach your child new developmental skills.
